Addictions - An Open Evening

Traditionally addiction has been regarded as a dependence on a specific substance such as drugs – including nicotine – and alcohol. Hypnotherapists however understand how addictions can also extend to behaviour and activities; obvious examples being addictions such as gambling, or sex or pornography.

In fact addiction can extend an extraordinarily wide range of activity which can become addictive. The term "workaholic" is not a joke – it too exists, as do addictions to exercise, video games … and shopaholics.

Which is why the James Braid Society, at its October 2010 meeting, examined the subject during an "Open Meeting" to which all those attending wereinvited to take an active part; discuss ideas, techniques, scripts and experience. It was an evening of participation.

During this meeting members and visitors were given the opportunity to examine how hypnotherapy could be used to best effect when an "addict" has a psychological dependency.

For it is well established that addictions may be mental or emotional, including with drug addiction which can produce dependency on both a physical and psychological basis.

Addiction can be defined as any physical or psychological dependence which negatively impacts a person's life.

Fundamentally all addictions are biochemically the same...addictive substances become a necessary ingredient of body chemistry, so that withdrawal occurs when the substance is withheld. Addiction means that the body has made an unhealthy adaptation that must slowly be reversed...

Hypnosis may reduce desires for addictive behaviours because it aids in relaxation. In a relaxed state of awareness, a patient may become more open and accepting of recovering from their addiction. It can also be used to give patients a greater feeling of control over their own recovery.
